In ELA class we read a poem called
“The Raven”. In this poem a man, who was not named, is reading a book when he
hears a knocking sound on his door. He goes to investigate and opens the door
to find nothing but darkness there. So he goes back to his seat only to hear
something on his window. He goes to investigate only to find a raven.
He starts saying that the raven came from Night's Plutonian shore which is the shore
to the underworld. The raven responds always with “Nevermore”. The man is
startled by this and starts yelling at the bird saying things like “Prophet,
thing of evil” or “Wretch, God hate thee”. Then the poem just ends, the story
doesn’t really resolve. Usually Edgar Allen Poe's poems are a little
scarier, this one is pretty mild. Maybe people were scared easier back in the
1800’s?
