Health Test

Last Tuesday on January 14, we wrote the health muscle test. We usually are given all class to complete the test. Past tests in Health have included True or False, Fill in the Blanks, and several Short Answer questions on the topic. For the test, we also had to identify and label the skeletal muscles in the human body and describe their functions. You might have brought pencil crayons just in case, as she had told me that we would have to locate where the specific muscles are on the diagram as well. Because we do not have health class too often, we have not learned a lot of information to study for this test.

This test does not cover a lot of material. For the test, we had only been given a page of notes and a diagram to memorize and understand. From the diagram, we should have known the general area of where the muscles cover, their opposing muscles (eg. the biceps' would be your triceps), and a brief description of what they do to help you move. You also should have understood the difference between voluntary and involuntary muscles, been able to describe what skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscles are and been able to contrast them from each other, known the brief description of what a muscle is, and have been able to identify what kind of muscle a given example would have been. As long as you had reviewed the material within the week-long period we were provided with (8 nights to be exact), you should have done fairly well on this test and have been confident with your answers.

Basketball

Basketball season had started. Thankfully I made it onto competitive team.  Lately, we had been practicing our plays for the upcoming games. Our first practice was kind of a light practice. All we did was got to know one another, the coach would ask if we play basketball outside of school and what position do we play, so she could figure out what position fits us best.  The next practice was kind of hard, because we actually learn plays to use for our games. My team and I came up with some weird names for our plays which was, Donut, Jelly Donut, Popcorn, Shell, and Stack.
Shell play is when we spread out to the three point line, and we would give and go. Popcorn is actually two wide stack and the person on the right would set up a pick on the left and the person that was set up for a pick would run to get the ball and the shoot. Easy basket. Our next play is "donut", which is the four player would set up in a circle like a donut, and once the person that's throwing in the ball smack it, the players that was on a donut set-up would open up and go to their position. Same thing with jelly donut but, the players would switch position and would go around first and open up, it's difficult to explain. Lastly, we have stack, which is a common play that is overly used. Stack is just when four player are lined up in a single pile and as soon as the ball thrower smack the ball then we would go to our positing and set up our shell plays. We have neat plays that we have been working on, and it's really enjoyable and interesting. You guys should watch our home games sometimes!

Davidoo za Buritoo ELA Bolg ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahaahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha :p

Hello 8A today I will be talking about our ELA exam. I chose ELA because I think it is one of the more fun classes that we have to study for exams. He have to know the following stories:

The Old Man and the Sea
    Treasure Island-

              Christmas Carol

               The Hockey Sweater

Stories and Poetry from Crossroads- A Hero's Welcome, Joy-Riding,

p.144-181 poetry covered, Here's to You Joe Dimaggio

Reading circle books- Family Ties- Amy Tan, and Barack Obama,

and Holiday Remarks by Barack Obama as well as your choice story

Poems- Cremation of Sam McGee, the Raven, Flanders Fields

We also need to know many characters from the following stories John McCrae, Robert Louis Stevenson, Alice Munro, Roche Carrier, Robert W. Service, Paul Simon, Ernest Hemingway, Joe DiMaggio, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Dickens, Barack Obama, and Amy Tan. Yes, it is a big list but isn’t to hard to memorize if you have read the stories. In addition to these characters we also have to know all the authors of the books.

Another part of our exam is writing. For this subject/part we will have to be able to apply/explain/use:

5-Paragraph Essay format, and parts (hook, thesis, topic sentence, supporting evidence or examples, concluding sentence, transition sentence, works  cited)

MLA form

Types of poetry- haiku, concrete poetry, free verse, limerick, couplet

Proper paragraph and sentence structure

Then we have to know grammar, for me this is probably the hardest part in the exam. We have to know things like: Parts of Speech- verbs (linking, auxiliary, and action), nouns (proper, common, abstract, and concrete), adjectives (articles, common and proper), adverbs (and the words they modify- including conjunctions)

Lastly we have to know information for a couple of other handouts like the poetic devices booklet, and parts of a story.

exams -sharin

Exams

Our exams start on Monday January 27th- January 30th this year. We are starting with Science on the 27th, E.L.A on the 28th, Math on the 29th and Social Studies on the 30th.  All of the Exams start at 9:00 AM and end in a couple of hours depending on the subject.

For science we were given an outline saying that the fluids unit and cells unit are the ones that make up the main exam. The introductory unit doesn’t play a big role but it has about 10-15% of the exam. In social studies we were given a rough outline but were told that it is put together like our tests. This exam will consist of multiple choice, matching, short answer, fill in the blanks, true or false, and two articles to read and answer the questions. THE 10 MARKERS OF CIVILIZATION WILL BE ON THE EXAM!! There will not be a word bank. In math we are going to need to know how to add/sub/mult/divide mixed numbers and fractions we will need to review square roots, Pythagorean Relationship, (also know how to spell hypotenuse and Pythagorean) how to find surface area and volume. The exam will consist of multiple choice, short answer and long answer. In E.L.A we are to know most of the authors for the stories/poems we read as well as essay parts/formats, vocabulary, parts of speech, types of poetry etc.

Back to School (From Winter Break)

Back to School (From Winter Break)

We are now back at school on this new year of 2014, from our winter break. We wish it was another week longer, but we have to come back anyway. We started off school on a Day 6, with ICT as our first subject. Some of us finished up a couple of assignments that were not handed in and 5 of us did blogs. Then we had Social Studies, then Religion and then ELA. Up to then, the first day of school was pretty much half finished. Then we had Health, then Science, and then French and by then, school was already done for the day. Time actually flew that day, in which we got to go home quick, which for us is a good thing.

In a way though, School is something I enjoy, except for waking up in the morning. We get to go back to learning, see our friends again, see our teachers, and that kind of stuff. Not only that, but school is also a really important thing in our life, so we should come back to learning. Out of everything though, the first day of school after coming back from winter break progressed really smoothly.
