ELA Hobbit Poster

In ELA, we are currently working on a poster that is about various jobs in the making of the Hobbit. We have to choose 6 jobs in total and we also can do it with a partner. You can divide up the jobs in which you do 3 jobs and your partner does 3 jobs. They can be anywhere from the director to a horse make-up artist. We can use websites such as IMDB or our notes which we took in class. We have to do a write-up that is at least one full paragraph long and it also has to be in proper paragraph form, (topic sentence, concluding sentence, etc). We also need to have a picture for each job.

The marking for our project is going to be as shown below:
  • 5 points for each paragraph
  • 2 points for each picture
  • 2 points for citing the source(s) of both pictures
The citations have to be MLA format. You must cite where you got your pictures and where you also got your information.  The total points that this project is out of is 54 so it may have quite a big percentage on our report cards.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we are learning about Egyptians and how their lifestyle was. What they did in the daily basis, what food they eat, how they managed their time, what technology they had back then, and many other cool things. We also got talked about mummifying and embalming the bodies of the dead, and what they had to go through before they could go to their afterlife.  We talked about how Osiris, the God of the underworld who determined who goes to the afterlife. What he does is he weight the heart vs. the soul using a scale, and if the heart is lighter than the soul, that means you had a good life, but if the soul is heavier that means you didn’t have a good life.

There were a lot of things that we learned that it got me interesting, such as:
·   -      How they build the pyramid
·        - Scribes
·     -   Papyrus
·     -    Solar boats
·   -      Hieroglyphs

But there was one thing that I really liked, that is the Zenet (S). Zenet was basically their kind of like our chess, a game board for the rich Egyptians. They used Zenet when they have spare times so they have something to do. We got to try and we actually played the game with a partner one time and my partner was Amrit, and it was really fun. I think Zenet is very interesting because it’s a game where you really have to think, just like the game, chess

Hello 8A!
Today, I will be talking about the rock climbing wall in the gym.
Recently, the school has purchased a rock climbing wall, it was instaled yesterday and we already got to use it! The wall is ten feet tall with different colour holds. Some clours represent different things like for example: The reds are the hardest to climb, some colours may all be foot holds while others would be hand holds. I am not to sure what many others think of this but I think there are pros and cons to this.
Pros:
-Mrs.Langstaff said this could
be in our fitness test.
-Also, if this could be interpreted into our
warm-up I think it could be lots of fun.
Cons:
-I think this could take away from other fun
activities, an example would be personally,
I would rather rally in badminton then climb
the wall for half of class.
-I also think that the money used for a wall could
have of been spent for different types of
equipment.

Overall, I think this is one of those things that will turn out to be what you make of it. Even though it is small and seems a bit childish you can still have fun on it! I am sure that all the younger kids enjoy it a lot more then anyone else and hat is probably the primary target to the gym teachers. I hope that in the future maybe they could add it either longer or higher but for now its a great start to something new at St. Maurice school.

                     THANK YOU FOR WATCHING/LISTINING

SMS Pep-Rally

On March 28th, 2014 we had a pep-rally for our competitive boys and girls teams. Grades 5-8, I think, came to watch teachers give speeches about how well they did this season and how proud they were. We also saw the team come up and lift their newly received banners into the air with confidence and joy just to show it. After all the speeches were made, all the pictures were taken, and the lifting up of the banners was done, the teams decided to play a short and fun game. The audience for this game was only the 7’s and 8’s because it was the end of the day for the grades in elementary watching.

This was actually a fun game to watch because they mixed up both teams. Both teams did play well and could tell they were also having a blast playing with their friends while more friends were cheering. One thing I’ll remember from the match though was Patrick screaming really high-pitched for the ball and him LeBroning. Just for people who don’t know what it is, it’s where to lightly touch another player and then fall to the ground either acting angry or acting like you’re injured. Sadly I don’t remember who won so I also don’t remember the score either. Overall though, it was an awesome first prep-rally for me and we got to skip 8th period that day.

Helen Unit Math Test April 10

Math Unit Test
The math unit test will be on ratios, rates, and proportional reasoning. The test will be on April 7, 2014. For ratios you will need to know that there will be two-term ratio, three term ratios, part to whole ratios, and part-to-part ratios on the test. For rates you will also need to know a rate is a comparison of 2 qualities measured in different units. A rate cannot be expressed as a percent because a percent is a ratio that compares qualities expressed in the same unit. A rate cannot be expressed as a percent because a percent is a ratio that compares qualities.
A unit rate is a rate in which the second term is 1.Porportional reasoning is when two qualities always have the same relative size. On the test there will be short answer, long answer, multiple choice, and matching. For the short answers there will be rate problems. You will also need to bring a pencil, loose leaf, a calculator, and an eraser. Good Luck!!!
